Dzieje rodu Morysów ze Śląska Cieszyńskiego - from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century

Dzieje rodu Morysów ze Śląska Cieszyńskiego

Series: MONOGRAPHS AND MATERIALS 6 (MONOGRAFIE I MATERIAŁY 6)

Edited by: Michael Morys-Twarowski

The history of the Morys from Cieszyn Silesia from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century is the result of 21-year long genealogical research. It began with conversations with the oldest relatives, and ended in archival queries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria. The biographies of Tomasz Morys (c. 1706-1750) and his 142 descendants to the sixth generation are not just sets of dates but almost everything that the author was able to “squeeze” from the available sources. Simultaneously, this is an untypical historical book, where great historical events remain in the background, while people about whom the researchers usually did not write come to the fore.
The wider audience will certainly be interested in the introduction, which is a kind of guide on how to search for peasant ancestors from Cieszyn Silesia.

Wieś zaginiona. State and prospects for research

Wieś zaginiona. Stan i perspektywy badań

Series: Monographs and Materials 5 (MONOGRAFIE I MATERIAŁY 5)

Scientific editing:
Przemysław Nocuń
Agnieszka Przybyła-Dumin
Krzysztof Fokt

The “village” is not an eternal or a universal phenomenon, but a product of some unique historical circumstances, in which settlement stabilization, intensification of farming and the idea of a self-governing community coincided.

Created in the 12th -14th century, the model of the village survived in a largely unchanged form until the 18th century. The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have gradually decomposed the medieval and early-Romanesque structures of the village, extracting its inhabitants from the “lair” of small autonomous communities, and force them into the steel framework of the modern, industrialized, atomized world.

The main interest of the authors of the texts published in this volume is not a village as such, whether modern or old, but the lost village, understood in different ways. Most of the published texts are written in the Wüstungsforschung movement, i.e. studies on physically abandoned settlements (so-called “pustki” or “pustacie”). In addition to the most literal understanding of the notion of the “lost village” – marking equality between lost and deserted settlements or those abandoned by its residents – the authors also presented some more metaphorical approaches to the topic.

Księgi sądowe wiejskie z Chorzowa i Dębu z lat 1534-1804

Series: Monographs and Materials 4 (MONOGRAFIE I MATERIAŁY 4)

We would like to present to you a new, valuable and unique publication of the Museum “Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów”, entitled: Court Records of Rural Areas of Chorzów and Dąb from 1534-1804. The book has been written by Zdzislaw Jedynak in cooperation with Andrzej Sośnierz. The book was published within the Monographs and Materials series, and is a compilation of unique, previously unknown, judicial records of rural areas of Upper Silesia, which are currently stored in one of the archives of Berlin.

Documents included in the book (dating back to the 16th-19th centuries) have been read and published (together with translations). The whole material is preceded by an introduction, allowing to present the context of their origin, giving information on the life of the inhabitants of Dąb and Chorzów. Interestingly, in these two districts there still live people bearing the same names as the characters of the collected archival materials.

The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing scanned pages of the court registers in question.

Proza folklorystyczna u progu XXI wieku. Część 1

Series: Monographs and Materials 1 (Monografie i Materiały 1)

Edited by: Agnieszka Przybyła-Dumin
The world of diverse of the belonging to folklore tales is an unusual, puzzling world, containing an infinite wealth of information about its creators and carriers – their values, norms, fears, and views. Tales have been accompanying people for so long that they have become an inseparable part of communication. They manifest themselves in all spheres of life and are a collective recipe, thanks to which many dilemmas, difficulties and mysteries are solved.

The monograph entitled: Folklore Prose on the Threshold of the 21st Century is a summary of long-term field research conducted in the region of Dąbrowa Basin. Six epic genres were recorded and analyzed: a folk tale, legend, anecdote, memoir, and a contemporary legend, present in transmission the late 20th century and early 21st century. In spite of many changes we did not cease the creation of such stories. They undergo transformation, but they are still an inherent part of our lives.

The ninth issue of the series focuses on two rectory granaries. When admiring their structures and exploring their history, it is worth remembering that they are one of the few objects of this type that have survived in Upper Silesia to our times. By the end of the 19th century it became common to store stock and tools in attics and storage chambers, which resulted in the disappearance of freestanding granaries.

The eighth issue of the publication is devoted to the school from Wapienica, which was erected specifically for the purpose of this type of institution. That is why, the school as a building, is an excellent representation of small rural folk schools from the nineteenth century, which undertook the efforts of teaching and educating children and young people in the region of Upper Silesia. The function of the described facility allowed us to reflect on the unfavorable development of education in Cieszyn Silesia, delivering a broader insight into the problems of educators and students at that time.

The seventh volume of the series is devoted to the cottage from Frydek, which is now a part of an affluent peasant’s farmhouse located in the Museum in the part of the exhibition presenting the architecture of the Pszczyna-Rybnik subregion. As a result of this work, we succeeded in reproducing the genealogy of the family and establishing the owners of the building.
